Shrewsbury RUFC Versus Anti-Assassins Invitation XV

Kick Off 3pm at Shrewsbury Rugby Club

On Sunday 26th April 2009 our 1st XV Squaud will be playing against ANTI-ASSASSINS who are a very well known North of England invitation XV in a match to celebrate the club's centenary.

The game will be a charity event in favour of the WOODEN SPOON SOCIETY who are closely linked to the ANTI-ASSASSINS.This is probably the first time that this invitation side has played in this part of the world and they are expected to field a side including players from senior clubs in Yorkshire and Lancashire. The A-A's were formed in 1950 and since that time have played regular fixtures both at home and abroad to raise funds for charity.Distinguished former players includethe current British Lions coach Ian McGeechan,ex England internationals John Spencer and Peter Winterbottom,Peter Stagg(Scotland),John O'Driscoll(Ireland)and Bill Calcraft and Mark Ella(Australia). They have toured in Australia,Canada,Dubai,East Africa andTrinidad. They teemed up with Wooden Spoon Charity in 2004 and this liason has proved to be a great success.

The clubhouse will be open at 1pm.where a buffet will be available to all players, past and present together with their guests and also to any visitors.Additionally there will be a Hog Roast available later in the afternoon.

To make the day a further success we have been very fortunate to have been able to obtain the services of THE SHREWSBURY POLICE CHOIR who will entertain us in the clubhouse with a selection of songs from their repertoire, including some rugby anthems. This will start at about 6pm.

This celebtation should provide a fitting end to the centenary season and as such we hope everyone will make an effort to support what is a sgnificant day in the club's history. We are the oldest rugby club in Shropshire.
